Infestation Prevention

Spiders prefer to build their webs in dark out of the way areas near their food source (namely bugs) such as crawl spaces. It is important to remember that spiders are attracted to places where their food source is plentiful. If you remove the other bugs the spiders will leave your building in search of food.

You will often find these pests entering your home through cracks and crevices near doors and windows, so make sure to use a quality sealant or caulk to plug up those areas. You can also install door sweeps on the bottom of each exterior door to block spiders from entering your home.

Many people try DIY pest control solutions like spider traps, such as glue boards, to prevent a spider infestation in their home or office. The issue with this method is that many female spiders stay hidden for much longer than their male counterparts. This means while you may be catching the males, the females are still out there laying egg after egg to replace them.

Venomous vs. Nuisance Spider Species in Georgia

Are most spiders in Athens, GA dangerous?

No. Of the 38 spider species in Georgia, only two are medically significant: the black widow and the brown recluse. Both live in the Athens area but are far less common than the wolf, jumping, and Joro spiders most homeowners actually encounter. Black widows and recluses are usually found in undisturbed spaces: sheds, garages, basements, woodpiles, and stored boxes that don’t get moved often.

How do I identify a black widow or brown recluse?

Black widows are shiny black with a red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. They prefer dark corners, cluttered garages, and the area around outdoor faucets. Brown recluses are tan to light brown, have six eyes arranged in three pairs (most spiders have eight), and carry a violin-shaped marking on the body segment behind the head. If you suspect a bite from either species, call a doctor before you call an exterminator.

What about Joros, wolf spiders, and the other big-but-harmless species?

These are nuisance spiders. Their bites are harmless to humans, but their webs and visible presence can be unsettling. Joros, which are large yellow-banded spiders, are an invasive species that are now common across Georgia. Treatment for nuisance species is straightforward: we eliminate the spiders and their egg sacs, then target the food source (the smaller insects spiders are hunting) so the population doesn’t rebuild.
